Ms. Irene Batebe is a chemical/ process engineer and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), a Master’s in Advanced Chemical Engineering majoring in Refinery Design and Operations from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Sustainable Energy Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology – KTH, Sweden.
Having worked at the Energy Ministry for close to two decades in the areas of Energy and Petroleum, Batebe remains a crucial asset with her vast experience in leading negotiations for key oil agreements, and sourcing for the financing of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and Oil Refinery.
Her position gives her a vantage point as the overall technical overseer in the management of the multi-billion dollar oil projects of Tilenga, KingFisher and EACOP. Some of her responsibilities at the ministry include the certification that all the equipment and machinery imported into Uganda to construct the refinery and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline meet international standards and are of the right quality and specification.
She has also been a key panellist and speaker at various oil and gas summits in Uganda, and across the world such as the African Energy Week in Cape Town, South Africa.
In the boardroom arena, Bateebe is a former member of the inaugural Board of Directors of the Uganda National Oil Company Limited (UNOC), where she served for two terms and also chaired the Board of Directors of the Uganda Refinery Holding Company Limited, a subsidiary of UNOC.
