Godfrey Karakire Murangi is a global financial accounting guru and works as a Vice President, Assistant Controller of Capital One Bank, a leading Fortune 200 company headquartered in the Washington DC Metro Area (USA). His responsibilities include accounting for a portfolio of multibillion-dollar investments, debt, derivatives, and enterprise infrastructure while leading a large professional team of finance and technology experts in multiple global locations.

Before joining Capital One in 2021, Mr. Murangi spent over five years at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission which is responsible for regulating Capital Markets as an Associate Chief Accountant, and over three years at the Public Company Oversight Board (PCAOB) as an inspector of audits performed by some of the largest global accounting firms. Prior to the PCAOB, Mr. Murangi spent almost 14 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers (“PwC”) in various leadership roles across the world, including multiple years in Tokyo (Japan) and Kampala (Uganda).

Mr. Murangi has over 23 years of global Financial Services experience in strategic and financial business planning, advisory, consulting, valuation and risk modelling, people leadership, accounting, auditing, complex automation, and project management.

Born and raised in Kampala (Uganda) during the turmoil of liberation wars in Uganda, he recalls jumping over bullet shells and unexploded hand grenades on his daily 5-mile walk to and from school. Despite the significant life challenges, he excelled with distinction to join St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), later earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University, qualified as a Chartered Accountant of ACCA (UK), and then earned his US CPA which demonstrates the value of hard work, resilience, laser focus, dedication and always being ready to leverage limited opportunities throughout life.

His reading recommendations are “The Wealth and Poverty of Nations” by David Landes, and “Why Nations Fail” by Daron Acemoglu/James A Robinson which provide good perspectives about the origins of global power, prosperity, and poverty. Currently, he is reading Nelson Mandela’s ‘Long Walk to Freedom” which provides lots of inspirational insights about the power of staying positive, resilient, and leading by example.

From us at the CEO East Africa Magazine, to you Godfrey, keep shining on, carrying the torch, and making Uganda very proud!
