PROGRAMME: Women Directors Leadership Programme Alumna, Class of 2020

Having gained experience in the areas of internal audit, risk management and finance over the last 28 years, Jane Nzau was appointed to to set up and operationalise the Defined Contribution Pension Scheme at the Central Bank of Kenya.

This, among others, included, setting up, the governance structure of the Scheme, which in Jane’s words, “brought her to sharply focus on the onerous responsibility, the Board of Trustees has to members of the Scheme, who rely on the decisions they make for their future in retirement.

“My goal is to make my client— that pensioner, that orphan or that widow, feel that they belong, which I have achieved by working with a transformative and creative team and adopting technological innovations,” she says of her purpose, adding: “There have been challenges along the journey that have taught me valuable lessons, but the only constant in life is change. This is a mantra I have embraced to navigate through the workplace to equip me for the next big task.”

Jane’s word of advice and encouragement, to especially upcoming women leaders is, drawn from the words of Professor Susan Vinnicombe and Dr. Hillary Harris of Cranfield University, who are both some of the facilitators of the Women Directors Leadership Programme (WDLP). “Women have, “lack of leadership self-efficacy”. This remains so true
