BRAC International has appointed Spera Atuhairwe, as its Director for Uganda, effective December 12, 2022.
BRAC Uganda, is one of the largest non-governmental development organisations in Uganda, since its launch, in 2006. The organisation, implements six thematic programmes in health, education, ultra-poor graduation, emergency preparedness and response, empowerment and livelihood for adolescents, and financial inclusion.
According to a media release by the organisations, “Atuhairwe’s career in the development sector spans over 20 years with demonstrated experience and expertise in strategic planning, institutional development and partnership building”.
“She has vast experience in fundraising, financial management, gender and social inclusion, people management, organizational and programme assessments, project management and implementation of MEAL systems and processes,” the media release said.
Before joining BRAC, Atuhairwe served as Country Director for Lifewater International. In partnership with local governments, she led the country team to improve health and safe water access to rural communities’ healthcare facilities and schools to transform the lives of vulnerable children and families.
At Limewater International, Atuhairwe, “successfully led change management processes, played a pivotal role in the development of the organization’s strategy, managed donors and strategic partnerships and strengthened internal policies, systems and processes.”
Before being promoted to the Country Director level, she was Lifewater International’s Director of Programs.
She has also worked with Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment and her service led to remarkable achievements such as the establishment of the Water Resources Institute-WRI in 2018. She also has significant work experience from conducting consultancies with leading international development organizations with programs in Uganda such as the United Nations as well as Strategic Initiatives for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA).
Atuhairwe holds a Master’s in Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University. She has also acquired Post Graduate Diplomas in Monitoring and Evaluation as well as in Human Resource Management from Uganda Management Institute-UMI.
