Straight on the heels of Kenyan government’s long journey to gaining approval for direct flights to the US, Rwanda is fast on the ground to leave nothing untoward in ensuring that its national carrier RwandAir’s application for nonstop flight to the US is approved.
The Rwandan government plans to expand Kigali International Airport’s existing terminal to include a new waiting area for passengers as part of a bid for a licence for RwandAir to operate direct flights to the US, media reports in Rwanda indicate.
The non-stop flight will shave hours off the New York-Kigali journey, which currently requires a connection at a hub in Europe, Africa or the Middle East. But by the time RwandAir does this, Kenya Airways will have already eased it all for the region as it starts its daily nonstop flight to New York in October.
According to Rwanda Today, a sister paper of The East African newspaper, preparations have started for a technical review by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) scheduled to take place on April 23.
