The Rotary community in Africa is celebrating the confirmation of Rotarian Emmanuel Katongole as the incoming Rotary International Director (RID) for Zone 22 (Africa). He is a former District Governor for Rotary District 9214 and a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga, Uganda, and will serve a two-year tenure from July 1st 2026, to June 30th 2028.
The announcement was made by Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick supported by a confirmation letter from Rotary CEO and Secretary General John Hweko. Katongole’s nomination came after a rigorous selection process including recommendation by his club, review by the Director Nominations Committee and subsequent circulation to clubs within Zone 22. Without objections or rival candidates, he was officially ratified and will be the Rotary International Director Nominee (RIDN). As per practice, while from Zone 22 (Africa), he will be championing the interests and promoting Rotary’s growth also in Zone 21 (Eastern Europe and the Middle East). Both Zones constitute the largest geographic region of Rotary and perhaps the most diverse.
Incumbent, RID Daniel Tanase embraced Katongole’s confirmation as he said, “Congratulations on the official nomination dear RIDN Emmanuel! It will be a pleasure and privilege to work with you. Enjoy the moment, it is well deserved!”.
Several Rotary Leaders from across the world congratulated Emmanuel Katongole.
Past Rotary International Director Patrick Chisanga expressed his confidence in Katongole, saying, “You can depend on me completely as you work to build upon the foundations laid by those of us who have served before you.”
Past Rotary International Vice President Yinka Babalola echoed his sentiments, describing Katongole as “not just a great choice but also a happy choice. He is in tune with our current realities and aspirations. I have no doubt Rotary in Africa and in our paired zone will thrive under his leadership.”
Rotary Trustees Ijeoma Okoro and Past Trustee Geeta Manek lauded his commitment to Rotary’s Foundation, emphasizing his dedication to championing Rotary causes. Former Trustee and Past RID Sam Okudzeto added, “May the blessings of the Lord strengthen and energize you as you prepare to lead Africa to Shine the African Light.”
Katongole is a true representation of Rotary’s core values of leadership, service, and the principle of “Service Above Self.” As the Rotary International Director Nominee (RIDN), Katongole will begin orientation and planning for his term immediately, supported by a strong network of Zone and regional leaders. His role will include mentoring new leaders, promoting Rotary’s growth and driving service initiatives that address the unique challenges and opportunities in Africa and the region.
His appointment is a big moment for Rotary in Africa as he is set to lead with vision and dedication. His leadership promises to strengthen Rotary’s impact, further solidifying the organization’s mission of strengthening goodwill, peace and service across borders.
Emmanuel Katongole, the new Rotary International Director Nominee (RIDN) has been a distinguished Rotarian for 28 years, a business leader, and a philanthropist with a legacy of impactful service. With extensive experience at international, regional and district levels, he has championed peacebuilding, membership growth, and humanitarian initiatives. Additionally, he also chaired the TRF Peace Major Gifts Initiative, championed the establishment of the Makerere University Rotary Peace Center, raised significant funds for global peace efforts and spearheaded the establishment of the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital in Kampala hence saving countless lives in Uganda.
As a visionary leader, Emmanuel has promoted innovative Rotary membership strategies, youth engagement and Rotary’s public image, including authoring a widely acclaimed book on Rotary’s impact in Uganda. Beyond Rotary, he is a Co-Founder and Chairman of Africa’s first WHO-certified ARV manufacturing plant and a recipient of numerous awards, including recognition as a Papal Knight and accolades for his leadership in health, entrepreneurship and humanitarian efforts. Emmanuel envisions a dynamic and inclusive Rotary that drives meaningful global change.
Currently, 17 Rotary International directors are elected to serve two-year terms. Directors are expected to attend and participate in four board meetings annually, normally held at the World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA or in the vicinity of the annual international convention or the international assembly. Directors are also expected to attend an orientation program while directors elect and attend up to two Board meetings as observers. Directors are not eligible to be re-elected. Directors serve without compensation.
Rotary Zone 22 consists of all 20 Districts and clubs in all countries across Africa. It is an administrative component of Rotary International, a global network of 1.4 million community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in communities around the world. Rotary members provide humanitarian service, promote peace and advance goodwill, making a real difference in the lives of people both locally and internationally.
