The Parliamentary Appointments committee will on Thursday 4th July sit to vet Akol Edward, President Museveni’s appointee as the Auditor General.

If approved by Parliament, Mr. Akol will be the executive head of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG)⏤ the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Uganda.  

He replaces John F.S Muwanga who has served for more than 20 years⏤ first from 2001 to 2005 and later from July 2007 to July 2024.

Edward Akol joined the Office of the Auditor General on 8th August 1994, as an auditor. On 22nd July 1999, he was promoted to Senior Auditor. 

Having excelled in this role, Akol got accelerated promotion to the position of Senior Principal Auditor on 19th May 2004, skipping the rank of Principal Auditor. 

On 26th November 2008, Akol was elevated to the rank of Assistant Director of Audit, a position that qualified him to become a member of Top Management. 

On 26th July 2010, Akol was promoted to become the Director of Audit, a position he held until 24th January 2023, when he was appointed Assistant Auditor General – Audit Division.  

He holds an MBA from the Heriot-Watt University-Edinburg Business School as well as a Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University.

He is also CPA (K) qualified. 

He wields immense experience in auditing Donor Funded Government Projects. 

He also holds certificates in Training of Trainers (OAG 1997), Foreign Aid Accounting and Auditing (UMI, 2002), Instructional Techniques (AFROSAI, 2002), IT Auditing (AFROSAI, 2001), ADB Project Implementation (African Development Institution, 1999) and Forensic Investigations and Money Launders (Zambia 2006).
