Uganda’s economy is growing. It is also churning out thousands of graduates every year. MBA’s have also become popular but yet we still see fewer CEOs in multinational or regional companies. This year, Stanbic Bank Uganda made the move and appointed its first Ugandan CEO, Patrick Mweheire. In the top 10 banks by assets, Stanbic, Standard Chartered, Crane Bank, Barclays, Centenary, Dfcu, Bank of Baroda, DTB, Citibank and Housing Finance Bank, there are now five Ugandan CEOs. This is up from four Ugandan CEOs in 2013.
On his appointment, Mweheire commented, “There are very many talented Ugandans. So I find it offensive when people say we are not ready.
Adding, “We are not yet where we should be. The number should be at least half of the banks.
