The League of East African Directors (LEAD) has announced the appointment of Pheona Nabasa Wall as its first-ever CEO.

LEAD is a not-for-profit organisation which was formed after realising that many East African companies in need of directors did not have a consolidated reference point for the selection and training of active and potential directors and tended to rely on personal references and “club” like structures to make board-level appointments.

The mission of LEAD is ‘Equipping of Boards for the advancement of East African businesses’.

LEAD has supported the selection of directors for organisations in the East African region for more than four years and through its events like the LEAD Convention and the annual NED Awards it has promoted an understanding of the role of non-executive directors and good governance on Boards across the region.

Pheona Wall Senior Counsel brings on board 16 years of experience as a governance expert, and executive leadership coach who has trained boards in governance under the Institute for Corporate Governance Uganda, CEOs Apprenticeship under the CEO Summit and young leaders under the Fidelis Leadership Institute (which she founded in 2019).

Having served as President of the Uganda Law Society, the General Secretary of the Pan

African Lawyers Union and as a Council Member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, Pheona Wall brings with her a well-honed grasp of organisational leadership and strategic management.

Pheona Wall adds to this well-rounded board experience in both private and public sector having served as a Council Member of the Judiciary Council, and on the ICAMEK and CADER boards.

“We are delighted to welcome Pheona to the leadership of LEAD,” said Gertrude Karugaba, the Chairperson of LEAD.

“Her deep governance and leadership background and business development skills should help LEAD strengthen channel partnerships, develop strategic alliances and expand our regional presence. We believe Pheona’s experience will complement LEAD’s existing leadership strength as we expand into new areas for equipping of boards and

directors to serve effectively,” added Karugaba.

“I am very excited to be joining the LEAD team,” said Pheona Wall, adding: “I believe LEAD has a great business model and talented membership that uniquely positions it to contribute significantly to strengthening board leadership and governance in the changing operating environment. We shall focus on strengthening leadership and creating mindsets needed in the African region, to increase sustainable mindedness and resilience in the face of this BANI world.”
