From Student to Scholar: My Journey through Academia and Public Service — Writes Dr. Narman T. O. Orwa

Dr. Narman T. O. Orwa, Senior Lecturer at Kenya School of Government.

My academic journey began at Kampala International University (KIU), a place that would prove to be the foundation of my personal and professional growth. As an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Education, I was eager to absorb knowledge, refine my teaching skills, and develop a deeper understanding of education’s transformative power.

KIU provided me with an environment that nurtured my curiosity, encouraged critical thinking, and instilled in me a sense of purpose beyond the classroom.

Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I felt a strong calling to delve deeper into societal issues, particularly conflict resolution and peace-building. Recognizing the value of KIU in shaping my academic pursuits, I chose to continue my studies at the same institution, enrolling in a Master’s program in Conflict Resolution and Peace-building.

This phase of my education was a turning point; it broadened my perspective on global conflicts, mediation strategies, and the intricate dynamics of peace-building. KIU’s rigorous curriculum, diverse faculty, and research opportunities challenged me to think innovatively and apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations.

As I engaged with peers and faculty, I realized that KIU was more than just an academic institution—it was a springboard for my personal and professional development. The university’s emphasis on experiential learning, critical discourse, and academic excellence gave me the confidence to pursue research and contribute meaningfully to the field of conflict resolution.

Through various research projects, field experiences, and academic discourses, I cultivated the analytical and problem-solving skills that would later shape my career.

Motivated by my passion for peace and governance, I pursued a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies in Kenya at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. My doctoral research allowed me to explore conflict transformation models, peace negotiations, and governance strategies, further solidifying my expertise in the field. This academic milestone was not just a personal achievement but also a testament to the strong foundation laid at KIU.

Today, as a Senior Lecturer at the Kenya School of Government, I have the privilege of training top government officials, imparting knowledge on leadership, governance, and conflict resolution. My journey from a dedicated student at KIU to an academic and trainer of policymakers is a testament to the invaluable role KIU played in my development.

The university provided me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to contribute meaningfully to national and international peace-building efforts.

Looking back, I am grateful for the experiences, mentorship, and opportunities that KIU offered. It was here that my journey as a scholar and practitioner began, setting me on a path toward influencing policy, governance, and peace-building at the highest levels.

My story is a testament to the power of education and the transformative role of institutions like Kampala International University in shaping future leaders.
