What does it take to become a CEO in Uganda?
Is there a specific degree, university, or qualification that paves the way to corporate leadership?
The CEO East Africa Magazine set out to answer these questions by analysing the educational backgrounds of 90 of Uganda’s top corporate executives across industries such as banking, telecommunications, energy, manufacturing, and technology.
Our findings reveal intriguing insights into the most common educational paths taken by those who reach the pinnacle of business leadership. From Makerere University’s dominance as the top undergraduate institution to the increasing influence of elite international business schools like Harvard, Oxford, and INSEAD, the educational journeys of these CEOs highlight a blend of local and global learning experiences.
This analysis also uncovers the rising importance of MBAs, executive leadership training, and professional certifications like ACCA and CFA, which play a pivotal role in equipping executives with the strategic, financial, and operational expertise necessary for success.
Beyond degrees and certificates, we explore the fields of study that produce the most CEOs, the growing presence of women in top leadership, and the impact of advanced degrees like PhDs.
So, what does it really take to reach the boardroom? Read on to discover the educational formula for success in Uganda’s corporate world.

MBAs provide executives with advanced financial, strategic, and managerial skills necessary for navigating the complexities of modern business environments.
Institutions such as Edinburgh Business School, INSEAD, Heriot-Watt University, and Harvard Business School have played a critical role in equipping Uganda’s corporate leaders with high-level management expertise. Florence Sempebwa Makada, Managing Director of Motorcare Uganda, holds an Executive MBA from Stellenbosch University, while Gary Corbit, CEO of Sanlam Life, earned his MBA from INSEAD.
Additionally, several CEOs have pursued MBAs with specialised focuses such as Oil & Gas, Finance, Economics, and International Business, demonstrating the growing need for industry-specific expertise. Anthony Kituuka, former Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda, pursued an MBA in Oil & Gas from Middlesex University, underscoring the strategic importance of specialised training in key economic sectors.
CEOs with PhDs
A select group of Uganda’s corporate leaders have pursued the highest level of academic achievement—a PhD—demonstrating a deep commitment to expertise and innovation. The Rise of Professional Qualifications and Executive Education
Professional certifications play an equally critical role in shaping CEOs. The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications feature prominently among CEOs leading financial institutions and insurance firms.
For example, Selestino Babungi, Managing Director of Umeme Limited, holds an ACCA qualification alongside his Bachelor of Statistics from Makerere. Similarly, Dorothy Kabagambe, CEO of ATC Uganda, is both an ACCA and CPA-certified professional, reinforcing the importance of financial expertise in corporate leadership.
Furthermore, short executive programs at institutions such as Harvard Business School, Strathmore Business School, and the Gordon Institute of Business Science are increasingly popular among top executives looking to enhance their leadership capabilities. Maxima Nsiimenta, CEO of Livara Natural Organics, completed the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Seed Transformation Programme, highlighting the value of continued executive education in scaling entrepreneurial ventures.
The Role of ACCA in CEO Success
One of the most recognised professional qualifications among Uganda’s CEOs is the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) certification. The ACCA qualification is particularly influential in the financial, banking, and insurance sectors, where strong financial acumen and regulatory expertise are essential.
