Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, the billionaire businessman and founder of the Ruparelia Group, and his daughter, Sheena Ruparelia, were honoured today at the 39th National Resistance Movement (NRM/A) Victory Day Anniversary, held at the National Teacher’s College in Mubende District, Uganda. The event, themed “39 Years of NRM/A: Salutation to Those Who Re-sanctified Our Homeland,” celebrated the Ruparelias’ outstanding contributions to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation, infrastructural development, and international recognition as a destination for global events.

Dr. Sudhir was awarded the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer). H.E., the President of the Republic of Uganda, bestows this award on people who have distinguished themselves in leadership and service in both the Public and Private Sectors. He was the only one to receive this award during today’s award ceremony.

Sheena Ruparelia was, on the other hand, awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal, which recognises individuals who have made lasting contributions to the country’s progress. The medal is awarded to both Ugandans and foreigners who have played an instrumental role in advancing Uganda’s sovereignty, independence, or development across various sectors.

Born in 1956, Dr. Sudhir’s early life was deeply shaped by Uganda’s socio-political upheavals. In 1972, his family, along with other Asians, was expelled from Uganda during Idi Amin’s regime, forcing them to rebuild their lives in the United Kingdom. Despite the challenges, Dr. Sudhir’s resilience and work ethic shone through. He worked in various menial jobs while pursuing his education and later gained financial experience in accounting roles. These early struggles instilled in him a deep sense of determination and a vision for a better future.

In 1985, he boldly returned to Uganda with just USD25,000 in savings. Armed with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit, Dr. Sudhir laid the foundation for the Ruparelia Group, which today is a USD1.1 billion conglomerate in real estate, financial services, education, hospitality, agriculture, and media. His remarkable story epitomises resilience, innovation, and strategic leadership.
