Britam Uganda Life has appointed Aidah Mwebaze Nkwanzi as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), marking a strategic move in its expansion into the life insurance sector. This appointment is particularly significant as Aidah becomes the first female CEO within Britam Group in Africa, reflecting the company’s strong commitment to diversity and leadership development.
Aidah, a seasoned professional with over 19 years of extensive experience in the insurance industry, brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to her new role. Her journey with Britam began in November 2010 when she joined as a Business Development Officer. Notably, she was Britam’s second employee in Uganda when the company entered the market that year, underscoring her deep-rooted connection to its growth and success.
Prior to her appointment as CEO, Aidah held various senior roles at Britam Insurance Company (Uganda), most recently as the Corporate Business Manager. In this role, she played a pivotal role in achieving departmental income targets, developing business strategies, and managing key projects that drove significant revenue growth.
Throughout her career, Aidah has demonstrated remarkable business acumen and leadership. She successfully spearheaded the establishment and expansion of Britam Insurance Company (Uganda), leading key initiatives such as:
- Expanding Britam’s NGO portfolio, positioning the company as the leading insurer for 80% of all international NGOs in Uganda.
- Securing major infrastructure projects, including the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, Nile Cable Bridge (Zenitaka-Hyundai JV), Entebbe Airport Expansion, Kanoni – Sembabule Road by China Railway No.3 and the Mpigi – Kanoni Road by ENERGO Projekt
- Strengthening business growth in government and tender-driven sectors, successfully onboarding multiple parastatals and key corporate clients, such as the Bank of Uganda, Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Uganda Airlines, Uganda Air Cargo (UAC), Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), National Social Security Fund (NSSF), National Information Technology Authority- Uganda (NITA-U) and Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) and Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL).
Speaking on her appointment, Britam Uganda Life highlighted Aidah’s ability to foster strong relationships with clients and partners, ensuring excellent customer service and retention. Her strategic leadership has been instrumental in Britam’s market expansion, significantly contributing to revenue growth and enhancing the company’s market share.
Aidah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Makerere University and a Diploma in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute in the UK. Her solid background in advanced insurance, business strategy, and stakeholder management makes her a valuable asset to #TheBlueTribe.
As CEO, she is expected to drive the company’s long-term strategy, oversee business performance, identify new investment opportunities, and enhance Britam Uganda Life’s market presence. Her leadership comes at a crucial time when the company is focused on expanding its offerings and strengthening its market position in Uganda’s life insurance sector.
Britam Uganda Life expressed confidence in her leadership, stating, “Under Aidah’s guidance, Britam Uganda Life will flourish and make a significant impact in the market.”
This milestone aligns with Britam Group’s upcoming 60th-anniversary celebrations in 2025, making Aidah’s appointment even more symbolic of the company’s enduring legacy and commitment to progressive leadership.
Britam Life secured official licensing from Uganda’s Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) in late 2024 to operate as a life insurance provider in the country. This authorisation marks a significant milestone for the company as it expands its footprint in the East and Central African insurance market.
Recognised as the largest life insurer in the region, Britam brings decades of expertise in delivering innovative and reliable insurance solutions to individuals, families, and businesses. The licensing reinforces the company’s commitment to safeguarding Ugandans’ financial security and aspirations while enhancing its service offerings, including general insurance, investment and asset management solutions, and life insurance services.
Building on the strong foundation of Britam Insurance’s existing market presence in Uganda, the newly established Britam Life Assurance will leverage its parent company’s significant experience, market share, and deep industry knowledge to carve out a competitive position in the life insurance sector.
With an established track record across multiple African markets, Britam’s entry into Uganda’s life insurance sector is expected to strengthen competition and provide policyholders with a wider range of trusted insurance products tailored to their needs.
