Mirian Taremwa’s journey began with a dream ignited by a trailblazer—Winnie Byanyima, a Ugandan aeronautical engineer, politician, human rights activist, feminist, diplomat and the current UNAIDS Executive Director. As a young girl in primary school, reading about Byanyima’s achievements fueled Mirian’s ambition to become an engineer. Later, her cousin Jackline, a brilliant science student, became another source of inspiration. “Her notes and past papers sharpened my understanding and gave me a vision for the future,” Mirian recalls.

Her passion for education and determination to overcome barriers began to take shape, setting the foundation for a future that would intertwine with KIU’s transformative journey.

Education Amid Adversity

Despite excelling in mathematics during high school and pursuing physics, mathematics, economics, and fine arts at A-level, Mirian’s financial situation prevented her from securing a government scholarship for university. Undeterred, she enrolled for a diploma in computer engineering at Kyambogo University, where she was the only female in her class. This milestone underscored her resilience and determination to challenge gender norms in the tech industry.

After her diploma, Mirian’s career began to take shape. From volunteering with Life Ministries Uganda to working with Dynapharm Kenya Limited, her journey demonstrated a commitment to growth and excellence. However, her decision to pursue a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at KIU in 2015 marked a turning point in her life.

A Pillar of Support During Life’s Storms

Enrolling at KIU on a full scholarship, Mirian embraced the opportunity to chase her dreams despite juggling motherhood and studies. Her journey took a heartbreaking turn when her husband passed away unexpectedly in 2016. “It was the darkest time of my life,” she reflects. But KIU became a cornerstone of support, offering her a job in the IT department to help her balance her responsibilities.

“This opportunity allowed me to rebuild my life,” Mirian says. Her determination paid off when she graduated in 2019 with a second-class upper degree and a stellar CGPA of 4.00. KIU’s emphasis on practical, technology-driven education equipped her with skills that would propel her career forward.

Building a Career of Excellence

Mirian’s post-graduation career trajectory is a testament to KIU’s transformative impact. Relying on skills gained from working in the IT department at KIU and her earlier diploma, Mirian was able to secure employment at the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Vvsaol Investments Limited and the Uganda Revenue Authority.

KIU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Ngoma, PhD, reiterates KIU’s dedication to providing the best education and learning environment that prepares learners to meet the needs and challenges of the modern world.

Last year, Mirian returned to KIU, this time as Deputy Campus Administrator and Executive Secretary, a role that spans multiple departments, allowing her to manage IT projects while contributing to the university’s growth.

“This role allows me to contribute to the university’s growth and give back to a place that has shaped my life,” she says. Her passion for creating community initiatives, such as starting a chess club and planning a running club, mirrors KIU’s ethos of holistic development.

KIU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Ngoma, PhD, highlights the university’s commitment to its students during challenging times: “We are dedicated to providing the best education and learning environment that prepares learners to meet the needs and challenges of the modern world. At KIU, we respond to the needs of society, the economy, and the environment. We prepare students for an inclusive society.”

KIU’s commitment to nurturing resilient leaders has also helped Mirian find solace in running. After her husband’s passing, she battled depression and found running to be a sanctuary. “It helped me process my grief and regain control over my life,” she shares.

Beyond her professional success, Mirian’s leadership skills have flourished. From chairing investment clubs to serving as an administrator for her Rotary Club, she embodies KIU’s vision of producing well-rounded graduates who lead with compassion and determination.

Fostering Global Perspectives

A key highlight of KIU’s transformative power is its focus on diversity and internationalisation. Studying alongside peers from Nigeria, Sudan, and Zambia, Mirian experienced a vibrant exchange of ideas and cultures. “The diverse learning environment fostered mutual respect and broadened my perspectives,” she says.

KIU’s curriculum, enriched by international lecturers and real-world applications, prepared Mirian to excel in a global workplace. “The connections I made at KIU continue to open doors in ways I never imagined,” she notes, emphasising the university’s role in building lifelong networks.

“KIU changed my life,” Mirian reckons, adding: “The diverse learning environment fostered mutual respect and broadened my perspectives.” On the practical and global approach to education at KIU, Mirian says: “The connections I made at KIU continue to open doors in ways I never imagined.”

Professor Ngoma underscores this commitment: “Our programmes are highly competitive and are market-driven. We stand for service excellence and client satisfaction. The quality of our internationally recognised programmes and the dedicated and highly qualified faculty and staff tell it all. We are known for excellence, innovation, and creativity across all disciplines.”

A Legacy of Empowerment and Inspiring the Future

As KIU celebrates 25 years of excellence, Mirian’s story reflects the university’s transformative impact. From offering scholarships to creating a nurturing academic and personal growth environment, KIU has empowered thousands to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

The university’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and community engagement has cemented its position as a leader in higher education. Initiatives like the 25 Weeks of Excellence campaign underscore its dedication to showcasing alumni achievements, fostering partnerships, and inspiring the next generation of learners.

“KIU changed my life,” Mirian declares. Her journey, from a young girl inspired by role models to a leader shaping the university’s future, is a powerful testament to the impact of education. As KIU looks to the next 25 years, it remains committed to building futures, transforming lives, and driving socio-economic growth across Africa.

Professor Ngoma sums it up best: “We are dedicated to providing the best education and learning environment that prepares learners to meet the needs of the modern world. At KIU, we inspire and prepare students to excel in an inclusive society while addressing today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.”

For anyone facing adversity, Mirian offers a poignant message: “It’s your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself, that determines how your story will develop.” Her story, intertwined with KIU’s legacy, exemplifies how education can empower individuals to overcome life’s greatest challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.
