By Prof. Silvance O. Abeka
As Kampala International University (KIU) marks its 25th Anniversary, I am honored to reflect on my transformative journey from a student to an Associate Professor and a Board Member of Kisumu City. My story is a testament to KIU’s vision of empowering individuals through education and innovation.
The Beginning: A Solid Foundation at KIU
My academic journey at KIU began in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. This program laid the foundation for my deep interest in technology, innovation, and problem-solving. Inspired by the rigorous academic environment, I pursued a Master of Business Administration (Information Technology) in 2007 and later a Ph.D. in Information Systems at KIU in 2009. My doctoral research focused on the determinants of web-based marketing information systems among microfinance institutions in Kenya. This study ignited my passion for digital transformation.
During my time at KIU, I was honored to receive the Chairman Board of Trustee Scholarship awarded to me by Al-Hajj Dr. Hassan Bassajabalaba to pursue both my MBA and Ph.D. studies. His generosity and philanthropy extend beyond borders, and I am eternally grateful for his support in shaping my academic and professional journey.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I served as the Chairman of the Kampala International University Kenyan Students Union (KIUKESU) between 2005- 2007, where I played a pivotal role in advocating for the interests of Kenyan students. I was also elected Deputy Secretary General of the Association of All Kenyans in Uganda (AKIU), an umbrella body representing Kenyans living in Uganda. These leadership roles enabled me to engage in student welfare, international collaborations, and community building among the Kenyan diaspora in Uganda.
The Professional Growth: From Lecturer to Associate Professor
Armed with knowledge and skills from KIU, I embarked on an academic career, starting as an Assistant Lecturer and later progressing to a Senior Lecturer. Over the years, my expertise expanded to include Cybersecurity, Digital Forensics, Artificial Intelligence, and E-Learning. Through research and publication, I contributed significantly to these fields, mentoring students and shaping curricula to align with industry needs.
In recognition of my scholarly contributions, I was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems and Technology at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST). In this role, I have spearheaded curriculum development, supervised doctoral research, and secured international research grants to advance technology in education and business.
Additionally, I serve as a Resource Person and Reviewer at the Commission for University Education (CUE), playing a key role in the accreditation of universities, campuses, and their academic programs. This responsibility has allowed me to contribute to quality assurance in higher education and uphold academic excellence in Kenya and beyond.
Leadership and Community Impact
Beyond academia, I have served as a founding Director of the Centre for E-Learning at JOOUST, leading initiatives that positioned the university as a pioneer in online education. Under my leadership, JOOUST became the first public university in Kenya to receive accreditation for Open, Distance, and E-Learning (ODeL) programs from the Commission for University Education in Kenya.
My dedication to technology policy and governance led to my appointment as a Member of Board of Directors of Kisumu City. In this capacity, I have contributed to ICT-driven urban development strategies, fostering digital transformation for sustainable economic growth. Kisumu City is committed to becoming a SMRT CITY through my guidance as the Chairman in charge of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, and ICT Committee.
Giving Back and Looking Ahead
The values instilled in me at KIU— innovation, integrity, and lifelong learning—continue to shape my career and aspirations. As I celebrate this milestone with my alma mater, I remain committed to mentoring the next generation of tech leaders and fostering collaborations that drive digital inclusion.
KIU has been instrumental in my academic and professional journey, and I am grateful for the opportunities it has provided. As the university commemorates 25 years of excellence, I stand proud as an alumnus whose story exemplifies the power of education in transforming lives.
Congratulations, KIU, on this remarkable anniversary! May the next 25 years bring even greater achievements and impact.
