Airtel Uganda Managing Director Manoj Murali is set to retire from telco this month, CEO East Africa Magazine can exclusively reveal.
According to a notice sent to the telco’s senior management this week, that CEO East Africa Magazine has seen, “Manoj Murali will be leaving Airtel Uganda to pursue other interests outside of Airtel Africa, effective 30 October 2024”.
“During his (Manoj’s) tenure, he was instrumental in providing leadership in Uganda and delivering business growth. Manoj joined Airtel Uganda in October 2020,” read the email.
CEO East Africa Magazine understands that he resigned in July 2024 and has been serving his 3 months’ notice.
Soumendra Sahu has been appointed as the Managing Director of Airtel Uganda Plc, effective December 1, 2024.
Ashish Dutt, Airtel Uganda’s new Chief Commercial Officer, will hold the fort for November until the new Managing Director reports.
Before being appointed to head Airtel Uganda, Soumendra was the CEO at Bharti Airtel, Gujarat Circle in India.
He has over 23 years of experience in the telco industry, but has only been with Bharti Airtel since 2015.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Soumendra has also worked with Tata Docomo, Reliance Communications, and Asian Paints.
Manoj, who this year was rated among CEO East Africa Magazine’s 100 Leading & Most Admired CEOs, is credited, among other key achievements, with the listing of Airtel’s shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange and the rollout of the 5G network.
In the four years of his leadership, the telco’s revenue and EBITDA grew by a compounded annual average of 15.9%.
